I've seen posts in other places about this. One of the things they were really upset about was there was virtually no discussion, everything was done behind closed doors due to covid. I guess they didn't have zooms setup yet.
Best part is, there was a petition to change the name, by a woman who no longer lives in town. Here is the initial petition. She is on FB so feel free to look her up and decide if you think she is woke or not. https://sign.moveon.org/petitions/dr...-the-tomahawks
In addition I think there was federal funding to be lost if they didn't make the name change.
But it sounds to me that many were upset it didn't go through the regular process.
Sorry I’ve been sick and haven’t been able to be on much the last few days. No, I’m not one of the guys involved in this and no, it’s not Covid-19, though it may have been a reaction to the booster.
The change in mascots was well publicized and not done behind closed doors. There were articles in the Glastonbury Citizen. It’s more that people don’t pay attention and then when it actually was changed, it started gaining attention.
I too am sick of all this political correctness and apologizing for the past. It’s ridiculous and has gotten out of hand. I’m not sure how anyone can find a Tomahawk offensive. It’s a symbol of strength so why is it offensive? Are we to just eliminate all Native American references entirely, good and bad? That’s absurd. Jay

I agree with every word you said. This isn't going to stop until we stop it. We have to stop giving in to this garbage. The people who are pushing this wish to delegitimize our whole society, and I have no doubt that they will replace it with something that is much worse for everybody, including the people they claim to care so much about but are really just using.

So my take here is that yes, Native American names shouldn't be taken as offensive. Native American culture and imagery is embedded in American culture and that's why you end up with Native American themed nicknames. And when you name a team, it's actually kind of an endorsement. That's why you don't have the Jacksonville Jerkoffs or the Denver Douchebags. And if Cowboys isn't offensive as a nickname, why have we decided Indians is?
But.......I'm just some white guy. Apparently many Native Americans feel these nicknames demean them. Who am I to say they are "wrong?". If I was Native American and I knew of the treatment my people had received through this country's history, might I be a little touchy too? Maybe. And at the end of the day, what's the big deal? Much ado about nothing. There's a million other nicknames you can choose. So just go with another name. Nothing worth punching someone in the face over!

I agree with Jay, et al on this.
Did native Americans complain about the Glastonbury Tomahawks? If not, it’s just white people being performative.

I posted a link to the original petition, the lady who started it doesn't even live in town anymore. And she's not a Native American. She felt uncomfortable wearing her old Tomahawk clothing around her Native American roommate in college. So let's get rid of the name
I have left views but agree this Tomahawk symbol stuff is unnecessary (especially to the point of physical violence). There are other hate issues that actually need addressing.
Conversely, it's also distasteful to see words like "woke" and "cancel" used as demonizing jabs against the left. Stop. How does one expect civil discourse if the opening remark starts with the negative connotation.

Huh? “Woke” is a defined adjective meaning “alert to social inequalities”. It is not distasteful - it was coined in the 1930s and popularized by BLM activists. As much as I cannot get behind woke cancel culture, it’s certainly not a negative connotation meant as an insult.
