I can't abide the stuff on commercial radio, but I love to listen to music, and I especially love to discover artists and music that is new to me. Several years ago someone told me about wwuh.org, the radio station of the University of Hartford and I have been hooked ever since. There are a variety of musical genres represented in their lineup. As a bonus, they archive their programs so you can listen anytime within two weeks of a show airing. And if that's not enough, the program hosts provide a playlist for their shows, so you can find out the name of the artist and song.

Any other local stations that folks enjoy?

I've always like WJMJ Catholic radio (88.9 FM) out of Hartford. They play a nice variety but it's mostly oldies. No commercials but they do break into prayer every now and then. That's when I change the channel. Nothing against religion, I just don't need to turn my car into a church.

I've had it with most of the major FM radio stations. I love how they promote themselves as "The Best Variety!" and then play Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynyrd, for the millionth time. Their idea of variety is just an endless tape loop of the same 200 songs that were overplayed years ago. I'd rather stick screwdrivers in my ears than hear this over and over.

For location stations, I listed to 89.9 WQTQ. They broadcast from Weaver High School in Hartford. On Friday mornings from 6-10 they play nothing but R&B and soul from the mid '60s through the late '80s, everything from James Brown and Sly Stone, Parliament-Funkadelic and the Isley Brothers to Aretha Franklin and Chaka Khan. They do this earlier in the week as well, but they don't really follow a particular format so you can't always predict what they're going to play. In the afternoon they play a lot of hip-hop (no thanks) but it's the earlier genres I mentioned, where they really dig into the archives, that makes it a treat to hear.

Similarly in the New Haven area there is the Univ. of New Haven station WNHU 88.7 which plays a lot of things you would never hear on commercial stations.

I still don't mind Sweet Emotion though especially the ending jam part. 47 years old still played daily.
Does 89.9 play the old school rap like Whodini, The Fat Boys, and Doug E Fresh. That was great.
Whodini's 5 Minutes of Funk is an absolute classic to this day.

Are there any stations that still have people calling up and discussing topics? Like CD only on the radio? They used to call them talk shows until talk shows because religious fanatic shows. Probably not, but I thought I'd ask. They also used to interview interesting guests.

My alma mater!! I do try to tune in when I drive through their broadcast area, but never thought to look for an app. I just downloaded to my phone, despite many poor reviews. I'll give it a go, especially if it works with android auto.

I believe 90.5 in CT has a lot of content like that.

Podcasts are certainly where you’ll find that content now.

Between 88-92mhz is usually community based. College/religious/non profit etc. Generally it's a bit freer in a sense. FM beyond that is usually music. Actual talk is still on AM. The thing with radio is that the broadcasting can tend to be a bit wider, especially on AM. I thought there was a good alt station somewhere. Outside of that I hear wtic is bigger for news. Usually I listen to satellite radio but I hear you. Podcasts might also be another venue. Sometimes I see WHUS bumper stickers
