Maybe I'm not understanding, but you said the closer to NYC you get, the grittier it gets with more litter and run-down buildings.

Miscommunication?

I have lived in two of the Havens (West and New). I love New Haven and think it is a great city (I lived in the Westville area). I would pick it any day over West Haven, my thoughts on which I already gave. East Haven is OK. Some nice residential areas, some expensive areas, and a lot of middle/working class areas. I think because of its location of being on the shoreline people tend to look down on it because it isn't as affluent as many nearby towns. North Haven is fine too. There are many nice residential areas but it does have some industrial parts to it. I can't think of a bad area of North Haven. (bad being unsafe or very run down)

I grew up in West Haven during the 60's --I loved it and wouldn't have traded it. But, it is now a sad shadow of what it was when I grew up...I left about 20 years ago.
