Anyone NOT have cable TV. My wife and I are thinking about getting rid of ours. How has it been for you without cable?

I'd go insane, LOL.

A friend of mine in Danbury doesn't have cable. He comes to my house instead to watch the game...

The hubby and I only have the basic package with our DSL and phone package, so we only get major networks and a couple of random channels thrown in (Weather channel, TBS, Telemundo). We haven't had "real" cable for 5 years and seem to be doing fine without it. He used to watch more sports, obviously, but we seem to have found other ways to fill our time. And if there's a really big game on that he'd like to see, we just go to a friend's house. Seems to work out just fine for us, but would probably depend on how addicted to TV you are now.

I also have basic service for reception for less than $20. We do not watch TV, other than the news and an infrequent movie we rent (we should get rid of our $9 Netflix, since we tend to keep a dvd for weeks before we decide to watch it. Or return it unwatched.)

We do not feel we miss on anything. We spend our evenings reading and writing, and that includes out 11 year old daughter. We do not feel virtuous because of it, it is just a personal choice, and actually an easy one to make because it goes hand in hand with our likes.

I'd do it for 6 mths and then see from there. If you do it, pretend like you can't get it again. Train yourself to do other things. Ironically I have it but watch only 3 channels for a total of 2 hours a day. It's a waste. GO FOR IT.

Then after 6 months ask yourself if it was worth saving $1 a day. lol

I personally couldn't do it, I love certain shows too much such as the History Channel, Discovery, ESPN, TLC, HGTV, etc I really wish you could just buy a package and pick and choose your channels because that would eliminate around 60% of them for me.

Depends on your personal situation however. If you can do without and just watch the basic channels then do it. Most people I've heard that have removed TV from their lives said they read more, spend more time as a family, do more activities, and generally live a more productive life. I wish I could do it.

Try Hulu.com, SurfTheChannel.cm and Fancast.com first. There are plenty of other sites too, including Fox.com. If you think they work for you (a DSL Connection at a minimum), you can do all sorts of things from there on. HTH

You could always try a little experiment. Without actually canceling your cable, why not pretend for a week or two that you don't have it. If you cave, then you'll know that it's worth having.

My parents don't have it and don't seem to miss it at all. We don't watch much TV at our house, but unfortunately I am hooked on a few programs on the "upper" channels. If it weren't for that I would love to dump the expanded service and save that $$ per month instead.
