Hi -- just read this. The hotel you're referring to in Indian Neck is The Montowese House and it was indeed on Linden Avenue. It burned down many years ago (maybe the late 50s or 60s). The Owenego Inn is also on Linden and is still there and going strong (more as an event venue). I too grew up in Indian Neck in the summers but over on Limewood Avenue (left at the fork instead of right up Linden). That road also had several old-fashioned hotels back then -- The Montasco Inn, The Thompson House, The Waverly. All are gone. What grand memories though!

Smile montasco inn

I stayed at the Montasco Inn in the 1950's and I spent many a summer staring from the front porch at the cottages across the street and going to the roller skating rink down the hill. The beach near where the Montasco Inn was public at the time and I spent many hours on this beach eating hot dogs and lemon ice from the snack bar that used to be there. I also remember Lounsbury store and the bar near where the store was.

Default 1950's beaches

Doreen, this sounds like the beach I am trying to find info on. My great aunt had a cottage at what I think was called Mamagwan (SP?) There was a roller skating rink, also a hotel and a hot dog stand on the beach. I remember we would walk down a curved hill of marshland to get to the beach. It was the early 50's. I can still see it in my mind. Have you ever heard of it?

There's a Momauguin section of East Haven, where the town beach is. Perhaps this is what you mean?

I was born in 1970 and grew up on Branford Point, which is a short bike ride to Indian Neck and spent lots of time in that wonderful section of town. I agree with others- would go back in time, loved those days spending tons of time outside and no distractions with cell phones and computers, kids could go outside in the morning and not come back till dinner and no one worried about safety. I agree with the suggestion to reach out to the Blackstone Library. I spent tons of time their growing up and their local historical collection was quite extensive.
