Hi

I and my wife are moving to CT. My job is in NYC (Manhattan) and her job is in Farmington CT.

Can you please give some suggestions on where we could live.

My wife is new to driving - so we would like to keep her commute to around 30-45 mins. As for me, I can take the train.

Couple of suggestions given to us were:
1. New Haven - good train service to NYC. About 50 min drive to Farmington.

2. Danbury - good train service to NYC. Greyhound bus service to Farmington (or else drive for 1.5 hours)

3. Berlin - its a nice 25 min commute from Farmington. But how do I get to NYC from Berlin? Does MTA service Berlin?

Any other suggestions?

Please advise!

I think the New Haven area is probably your best bet if you want to keep your wife's commute to a minimum. The train from New Haven to Grand Central during rush hour is about an hour and forty minutes. It's closer to two hours at other times. The drive from New Haven to Farmington isn't bad. She shouldn't hit too much traffic on I-91.

The train from Danbury to Grand Central is 2 hours each way. It may make more sense to drive to the Brewster, NY station and go from there. Your wife would have a longer commute to Farmington from Danbury than from New Haven.

If your wife didn't mind a slightly longer commute, I'd suggest Fairfield or Milford. Those towns are on the Metro-North New Haven line. They're slightly closer to NYC and nicer than New Haven.

I don't think there's any feasible way to commute from Berlin to NYC.

To get to NYC from Berlin, you catch the Amtrak in Berlin and switch to Metro North in New Haven (or stay on AMtrak, it's more $). Or drive to NH and park. It's like 90 minutes on the train from NH to Grand Central. I couldn't imagine doing this as a commute.

Milford is an hour and 20 min to Grand Central, and about 50 min to Farmington.

Look at the Brewster NY area...1hr 15 min to the city and about an hour to Farmington. Danbury would be good, but you are going to have a 1 hr 40 min commute EVERY day one way to the city..too painful to me.
