Most of coastal CT is protected by the open Atlantic by Long Island to the south- with Long Island Sound; high surf conditions along the CT shore are less then further east- though coastal erosion can be severe from a coastal storm or tropical cyclone, especially if the water 'backs up' into western LI Sound, or at high tide. Extreme eastern coastal CT- has the more open Block Island sound.

Tropical cyclones, & Nor easters, as well as other storms can play havoc to all of the New England coast, with flooding, coastal erosion. This can be made worse by high tides and other factors like strong and persistent winds from the NE. One can look back at 'The Perfect Storm' in the early 90s- the Blizzard of 1978- Hurricane Carol in the mid 50s, as well as the Great New England hurricane of 1938 and see incredible damage.

Coastal CT and south eastern New England have the 6 states mildest climate- according to Koppen- it is considered 'humid subtropical'.

This past summer saw water/ocean temperatures at a record high in all of coastal New England from Maine south, with temperatures at 70 degrees in New Hampshire and 75 degrees in Rhode Island, Connecticut, The Islands and Cape Cod.
