Any thoughts on the best place to live in Connecticut if my wife will be commuting to NYC and I to Hartford? We are relocating from Los Angeles. Thanks.

You should look into places in the New Haven area, or even Milford (has some nice area's by the water). It will allow your wife to easily get on Metro-North (the only sane way to commute into NYC) and keep your commute relatively short. However, it really depends on if you have children/ plan to have children that you will be sending to public schools.

You'll want to be as close as NYC as possible IMO without getting too far from Hartford. I'd suggest a look at Fairfield even though it will be a tough commute to both.

To echo what others have said look at the towns between Norwalk and New Haven. Which town you live in will depend on what your budget is and what type of amenities you want to have.

If I could sell my house, I would be out of here in a heartbeat. No job is worth living here.

Mikey,
Milford and Fairfield would be good towns to start your search in. My personal preference is Fairfield. The commute to NYC is shorter than Milford. The train ride from Fairfield into NYC is usually about 75min though there are some trains that are a few min shorter or longer. I wouldn't recommend trying to take the train to Hartford though, it's too expensive and infrequent. I think the drive time without traffic runs somewhere around an 1.5 hours, but I am not 100% certain of that so someone correct me if I'm wrong.

You probably have it priced too high.

I'd guess the driving time is about an hour without traffic. Mapquest says from central Fairfield to downtown Hartford is about 63 miles. I don't think taking the train from Fairfield to Hartford is even an option, unfortunately.
