West, east, and south of the main train station are pretty sketchy. However, the areas north of the station are considered to be safe. Also, there are 2 additional stations in Stamford that are in better neighborhoods. Springdale is the safest station but Glenbrook is safe as well.

Living in Stamford would be like living in the East Bay. The areas that are fun, are also sketchy. Same with SoNo.

If you decide on CT, I would think Greenwich would be the way to go. Although the nightlife might be sleepier than Stamford, it is boutiquey, safe, has lovely beaches, and is closer to NYC. It is more like Marin.

I agree fully.

However I find it awkward that a business from SF in CA goes to Stamford where business isnt even valued 25% as much as SF businesses. Talk about economic downfall.

It would make more sense if a business of a regal value moved to NY or even Bridgeport.

What makes you think business is not "valued" in Stamford? Stamford is a major employment center and home to many major corporations. If it did not value business it would not be as successful as it is. Jay

Kristin85 said a couple of things that need clarification
1) the area "near the Stamford train station" can mean a lot of things. Just south of the train station is a transitioning neighborhood that has higher crime. Just north of the train station is downtown, which has many housing opportunities less than a 15 minute walk (or a short bus ride) from the station. If you live near downtown you will have access to the train and many shops and restaurants, in a safe urban environment.
2) if you live in one state and work in another you have to file a tax return for each state but get "credit for taxes paid" in the other state- so it's not like you pay 2x the taxes. CT taxes are lower than NY taxes.

I actually live in the East Bay, so this is nice to hear. I prefer it over the Marin area. Can you offer any more advice on areas to visit? I'm actually going to be up there next week, so it would be nice to have some ideas on neighborhoods to check out.

Thanks!

Too funny! Sorry I suggested a Marin-ish place for you. I moved away from SF 10 years ago, so you'll have to take my comparisons with a big grain of salt. That said, Stamford reminds me of Oakland. There is not really a Berkley here. Of course, there are very very few places like Berkley. Fairfield is, in part, a college town & fun, but it would be further from NCY.

There are plenty of nice apartment buildings around downtown, by the train station. Also try Bedford Street.

SONO is pretty fun. It is also further from NYC. It is less urban, and reminds me of Echo Park/Silver Lake in 2001... Or maybe the Mission in 1995. It is a bit more homey, but still walkable and with lots to do.

O.k. Now I am going to come to terms with how old I'm getting. Good luck on your hunt!
