The main thing you need to keep in mind, if you have any type of seperate DVR or anything with it's own tuner that you connect directly to the cable coax, it will be all but useless when you switch to satellite. Satellite requires that any device, TV, DVR, etc, have it's own SAT tuner box connection to function, unlike cable TV, with which you can plug the coax directly into a TV or other device that has it's own tuner. I use a Windows Media Center PC with a dual tuner with which I can record up to 2 channels at once and watch a 3rd using the TV's tuner, I would lose this functionality if I switched to SAT (unless I paid them more $$ for a dual tuner DVR box), which is why I don't switch.
That is the problem with switching services, you have to get a new DVR. I don't care for the DVRs that Directv now has, I prefer the TIVO units. Luckily I have two of them and have found a source to replace them should I need to.
