"40 years after the first VHS video cassette recorder rolled off the production line, the last known company making the devices is ceasing production."
If I had a lot of important VHS or Beta tapes I would transfer them to digital and forget about VCR's. I don't think they will make a comeback like LP's and vinyl. Why would they? It's like cassettes, I'm sure there's a few diehards still hanging on but for the rest of us we've moved on.
Just a quick tip here but you may have the ability to transfer right under your nose if you have a DV camcorder.
One of the little known features on some models is what they call pass through. You can hook a VHS deck to the RCA inputs on the camcorder you can transfer to the computer with firewire as DV. This will work with any analog source, hi-8 etc.
Interesting. My experience is that the VHS-C camcorder recordings are far more subject to failure than the full size VHS tapes. It was only a matter of time before manufacturing would stop on the recorder/players. Dude probably needs to buy a couple and stick them in a deep freeze so he can use them in the future.

Neither did I until I read the article. I still have a DVD/VCR combo that get zero use. It's just gathering dust as are my DVD and now Blu Ray players. I have the disks but rarely if ever play them anymore. Streaming has taken over.
