So I was having issues with my cable modem. The Cox tech removed a wireless router and proceeded to wire my roomies pc (running xp sp 2) straight into the only jack on the back of the cable modem, the ethernet port. Very standard setup.
The PC had Internet connectivity when I began. One of the first things I did when I started troubleshooting was to check the Ip. Then I released it. I attempted to renew it [ ipconfig /renew] but the DHCP server didnt issue me a new IP.
That is contrary to how I understand networks operate. The Cox network sees the cable modem's mac address, the cable modem sees the PCs mac address. DHCP should be able to issue and push a new lease/ip to the PC requesting interent access. And... Cox doesnt support static IPs without a fight.
So why didnt Cox DHCP issue a new IP when it was requested? The computer was off, I turned it on, it had Internet - which required the DHCP to issue a new IP when the computer powered up. Then I released and renewed, then no ip and no internet. Doesnt make sense. Someone plz enlighten me. Thanks.
