I believe Sparkman alluded to this in another thread. A group called "Auxin" has purchased the old Wilson factory downtown and is going to turn it in to a hotel, conference center, and retail stores. The article in today's Herald-Citizen is fuzzy on the details (of course), other than it's going to be a 20,000 square foot conference center with a four-story hotel. I don't know if the Wilson building is going to be torn down or if it's going to be renovated, and I don't know what's going to happen to the businesses that are in part of the Wilson building right now (laser tag, Rich Froning's Crossfit Mayhem, and the Asian grocery store). But this sounds like something that downtown needs.

In addition to private individuals who are part of Auxin, other entities involved with this are Tennessee Tech University, Cookeville Regional Medical Center, CityScape, Putnam County, the city of Cookeville, and the Upper Cumberland Development District.

It would be nice to see the plans. Maybe something will be posted at the chamber of commerce web site. In the mean time, here's the article from today's H-C:

Downtown plans unveiled

The person who told me about this last month runs a west side business and was right on. Not surprised the H-C article was fuzzy, that has turned into a very poor excuse for a daily newspaper.

Agreed. After the old guard all retired, the H-C has gone downhill and does little more than publish news feeds and press releases except for the sports section. The term "investigative journalism" doesn't seem to exist there.

Anyway, with all those entities involved including the university and the hospital, I can't imagine that this project will not happen. Still, there are a lot of questions about it that the H-C failed to address.

This would be so huge for Cookeville and the West Side; I really hope this happens.

Oh gosh me too. I hope it's done tastefully, though. I hope whatever hotel it is will blend with the historic nature of that part of town and not be some bland stucco thing like the Holiday Inn Express although I suppose anything will be an improvement over the gravel parking lot that's currently there.

I wonder what retail they're hoping to snag. It would be nice if this could also include the building supply place next door, but that's probably asking too much.

And what's to happen with the laser tag place, the crossfit gym, and the Asian grocery store? Isn't there also a Mexican grocery store on the far end of this building facing Spring Street?

Snag.

Hypothetically(?)...what if the group who purchased the the building and planning the project had verbally committed an amount to the person (local CPA and entrepreneur) owning a land (parking lot) adjacent and necessary to continue this project. No written agreement or handshake had been formalized.

Enter speculative family (infamous rental property owners with a name behind fruit) with cold hard cash and make lower offer (mind you...it's cold hard cash) to the aforementioned accountant businessman and the bean counter takes the offer.

Does that sound like a story highlighting greed and spite working against the greater good?

Sounds like you know something. Are you referring to the condo high rise that's been proposed over there?

I've heard a little about condominiums up high on top of something.

I read in the paper about the proposed condo high rise around there but I was under the impression it was the lot on Cedar just north of Ralph's Doughnuts and not the same lot as the proposed conference center/hotel. Or am I wrong?

My wife used to rent booth space at the old Antique/Consignment store on Cedar just north of the RR tracks. She was told that the property's new owner was planning on building condos there. That building is a health hazard and should be torn down first though. Other than the occasional train that passes by it could be a great spot for "city dwellers".
