The Mohegan Sun Casino just outside of Wilkes-Barre is planning for a major expansion already. The Times Leader reports that they are planning to build a brand new hotel and conference center next to the casino. I think this is great news for the Greater Wilkes-Barre area entertainment scene, and for the entire region as a hole. I am not much of a gambler, but I see the major benefits this casino has brought to the area. It has brought in jobs, major entertainment options, and it pays out millions of dollars of economic development monies to cash strapped city's and towns surrounding the casino. Wilkes-Barre has already recieved two million dollars i believe, and is using it to install a state-of-the-art camera surveylance system. This is only the first paycheck! The casino promises a similar paycheck like this everyyear I believe. I am looking forward to the installation of table games into the casino. That will make it a "real" casino, and am definatly looking forward to the coference center and the entertainment options it will bring. Maybe major boxing events? Maybe majic acts, national music acts ect? and of course the hotel itself, which will probably end up being the nicest hotel in the region when complete. Say what you will about the downside of a casino, but all I see are good, positive things. Here's the article...Mohegan Sun eyes 9-story hotel, conference center | Wilkes-Barre News | The Times Leader

casinos don't really meet their negative stereotypes in my opinion. I'm happy to see them popping up outside of the reservations.

that casino did a lot for the area, but I think it is about time they get their own exit off 81. I'm kinda out of the loop these days, but i never heard any concrete plans of it.

Another large conference and entertainment venue would be beneficial.

I agree....an exit off of 81 onto 315 near the casino is long overdue. It would go a long way towards clearing up congestion at the Pittston exit and on Kidder St/315 near W-B.

I also agree. It is long overdue. It is also a long way to go in between the Pittston exit to the first Wilkes-barre exit. I feel sorry for people from out of town that accidentally miss the Pittston exit and have to drive all the way down to W-B before turning around or vice versa. I have done this once or twice myself. Right by the Mohegan Sun would be a great spot for it.

I did this myself...hopped on 81 thinking there would be an exit for the casino, instead of takin the WB exit...WRONG! Ended up having to go all the way out to that Pittston exit to turn around. Ugh!

I figured a hotel would be part of the plan eventually. Even though I live locally, I wouldn't mind spending the night there on a little overnight escape.

Let's hope that Mohegan Sun follows through with their proposal; it would be an economic boost to the area.

I was thinking the same thing. It would be really cool to go up there, gamble a little bit, maybe bet on a horse, then go to dinner at one of the many restaraunts, then go see a show or concert at the new convention center, then head to a jacuzzi room to end the night, and all right in our backyard. I imagine that the Woodland's must be a little worried, but it may end up being a great thing with competition driving down prices.

Just found this on Times Leader web site Lot eyed for casino’s proposed hotel | Wilkes-Barre business, company news, financials | timesleader.com - The Times Leader (http://www.timesleader.com/business/Lot_eyed_for_casino_rsquo_s_proposed_hotel_11-05-2009.html - broken link) looks pretty nice. The Woodlands must be shaking in thier boots.
