Even before covid 19 what was the appeal of a cruise

What? There are excursions or self-tours that give you much more exposure to a place than the port gift shop. Granted, time is limited but you can get a good introduction to a place during a cruise.

There are all different kinds of cruises so it is hard to generalize them. On the Alaska one we are taking next summer, once we step on board in Juneau until we get off in Sitka eight days later, we won't be seeing any gift shops, or anyone other than the people on board.
