I don't see the problem with them taking their kids. Better than leaving them with someone while they are away. I do think they should pay the bill for the rescue though.
How about not going or at least waiting until the kids are a bit older?
A ten year old or an 18 year old could also have gotten sick and required medical attention.
True, but there are a lot of things that are more serious as an infant than as an older child or an adult. A child that young hasn't built up an immunity to a lot of things an older child has, so illness is more likely. And an 18 year old is an adult and can make that decision for himself. I doubt we'd be talking about a helicopter rescue if an 18 year old was sick.
To me, it seems like pure selfishness on the part of the parents. The kids won't even remember this great adventure. The parents probably wanted to do it, and weren't going to let a couple kids stand in their way. I think it is irresponsible to take a child of any age, really, that far from medical care for that long of a time.
Whatever happened to common sense? I agree with the poster that said it was incredibly stupid to go on such a trip with a child this young. The child is so young they are NOT going to remember anything anyway except maybe they were sick. Just because you CAN do something (legally) doesn't mean you should. And of course the taxpayers are going to bail them out. I saw footage on the news this morning of people bailing out of the back of a C-130 and said "gee, what country are we invading now"? It wasn't. It was to go assist the people in this boat. I hope the parents get a hefty bill for this. Let them pay someone to take them back out to their boat too. It's like being told that a wildfire is coming towards your house and you had best evacuate because it is so big. And deciding instead to stay and fight the fire away from your house. Yes, it is your right to stay BUT don't expect parajumpers/firefighters to come and risk their own necks because you decided to go against common sense warnings. The same with hurricanes, it is your right to stay when told you should evacuate but if it all goes to hell in a handbasket blame yourself and don't expect any help.
news today said airforce and national guard do that kind of rescue for free. don't know about other resources.
I agree it was very selfish. the kids are way to young to learn anything or remember anything about this kind of trip. the parents were hell bent on doing this trip--the kids be damned. and obviously they weren't as ready or prepared if their vessel couldn't make it even 2 weeks.
