Has anyone found a news source or website that cuts through all the BS celebrity and tabloid type stories and reports news that is actually important to know?

I used to go to USA Today, but they have gotten as bad as the rest. For example, the top headline today is about the stupid Kardashians, and other things I don't give a flip about. We have a pressure cooker going on in Iraq, border issues, economic issues, and 95% of the stories on the major news websites now are sensationalized fluff. If I wanted that crap, I'd buy a copy of the Enquirer.

Any suggestions?

"News" reporting is simply no longer suited to the print media, who couldn't keep pace with broadcasting, let alone the Internet. And too many local newspapers have degenerated into little more than "fortified" gossip.

I like the regional "all-news" AM radio outlets in the major cities (KYW-Philadelphia is still going strong after nearly 50 years) with CSPAN as a backup.

And let's not forget that an increasing number of radio stations, not to mention the networks behind them, now "stream" their news coverage via the Web, with major stories "canned" for later access.

News is all about shock value. The days of some local and world news is over. The BBC is better than most, but still none of it is very good. Mostly all propaganda and filled with agendas. People all think the world is crazier than ever due to the out of control media. If you look around, things are actually great. Birds singing and plants growing. Great times, but if you get caught up in the negative media frenzy, you might as well forget the good times.

I bounce around headline news sites. From those I pick what I want to read. Allsides.com is a good place to gauge what is being said about various topics by all the sides.

My current overall favorite both in the car and on television is BBC World News. They do have a website but most of their offerings online are in video form. The only issue I have with them is that they use a different format than our news stations. I've not totally gotten used to theirs. That said, I do enjoy getting more in depth area specific news and reports.

BBC <= International TV News
None <= US domestic TV news

CSMonitior <= US Domestic Newspaper (Good for international also) The Christian Science Monitor - CSMonitor.com
International Herald Tribune <= International Newspaper International Herald Tribune | The Best of Global Journalism

"Local Newspaper/Local TV news " <= For local (Where ever local is for that "story') On the web

Thanks for the suggestion, I'll check some of them out. Just looking for intelligent news reporting on things that may acutally impact my life and my family. I just don't care what Justin Bieber or Beyonce is doing, but you would think that tripe is news we all need to know.

Any of the foreign news sources are better than the American ones. We watch Out of Ireland a lot and learn things that were never reported here in the US. BBC is another good source.

Russian times
BBC news
Aljeezira international (surprising to find a lot of very in depth news here)
Financial times
Fareed Zakaria GPS ( very detailed especially about middle east issues and issues in the United States)
Wall street journal and NY times editorial.

There are plenty more but they tend to be more in the financial matters but you can gleam a lot more if you understand complex economic systems.

I also follow a whole lot of Bloggers with varied viewpoints.

USA Today has always been thought of as "news lite," I agree with the BBC recommendations, I like NPR, and surprisingly, Al Jazeera America is quite good.

And I find that disconcerting. Why do you think that is?
