Easy for you to say (so dismissively) from the wet climes of Pennsylvania. Desertification devalues the land as much as radioactivity really. But thanks for not giving a crap about the country and millions of its people.

Historically, the western US including CA have been in a wetter-than-usual pattern for about 50 years. Now going back to its usual patterns. Difference is the number of people fighting over the available resources.

This was a very good read. The last 14 years have been the driest in the last 100 is a big statement, and Lake Mead at it's lowest level EVER!

What California government should be working on is desalinization plants. We have a whole damn ocean with trillions of gallons of water that can be processed into drinkable water.
But instead we get to blow money on a high speed train that's not really a high speed train going from Nowhere California
alll the way to Where California. Its utter crap. Instead on working on a long term fix for drought and the water problems in California we get to spend time money and energy on something that is a solution for something that was never a problem. And it will get subsidized forever because it will never be profitable. Hell it won't break even forget profit.

Why can't the Government work on some country wide system of water transfer. Hell the Romans built aqueducts 2000 years ago. We can't build pumping stations and create the ability to take water from areas of the country where its flooding and abundant and transfer it or pump it into huge storage tanks or into lakes.

Whoa, easy there turbo! I'm fascinated with the California water system. to think that snow melting from Mount Shasta, or the Colorado Rockies can end up in a kitchen in LA I think trumps what the Romans did. I grew up near lakes that San Francisco pumps water to from Yosemite that is another great feat.

As for the train, they said the same thing about the trans continental railroad, Bay area rapid transit, the Interstate system, and the space race. Buying into the naysayers when the construction industry feeds your family is a pretty silly ideal. I could get on a train in Pleasanton and board a plane in SFO an hour later. I could land in Oakland and be home in 1 hour never getting in a personal vehicle.

LA was stupid in the 40's and bought into big oil, and buses instead of a mass transit system. They now have a chance to go between the 3 major metropolis in California on a train that will be a great system. Don't believe the hype, because they just want your vote and don't care about jobs or advancement in the greatest state in the nation. One only has to look to red states that California tax dollars go to support to see the failed ideal.

Desalinization will be looked into if the drought continues, but hasn't been needed in the past. Is your lawn brown? Those who live in glass houses shouldn't cast stones.

And this is why California will continue to ignore the virtually unlimited water it lives next to. Get out while you can.

Water levels have varied widely over the years out west.

The complaints about the west "drying up" can change quickly to complaints about the region being water logged.

The map of the Great Salt Lake, example given, is constantly changing. a number of years ago, a lot of money was spent to alleviate the problems of a growing GSL.
