"Dr. C.J. Peters, one of the heroes featured in "The Hot Zone" chronicles the 1989 outbreak of Ebola Reston, which was transmitted among monkeys by breathing. In 2012, Canadian researchers found that Ebola Zaire, which is involved in the current outbreak, was passed from pigs to monkeys in the air."
So although it may be true that it is not airborne at this time, the possibility of mutation obviously exists.
When one listens to experts try to pass off the seriousness of Ebola contagion, one is not so easily impressed with their weak commentary obviously attempting to keep the public calm.
Yes, but this is true of AIDS and every other disease. Its a remote possibility indeed. "Anything" may be theoretically possible. We can conjure up all sorts of "panic scenarios" if we try. What makes more sense is to maintain a good public health system with good disease surveillance and isolate and deal with each case as it arises. At the same time, work on a vaccine will continue. At the rate they are going, I think a vaccine that is not just experimental will be approved for use in the near future.
Just watched Anderson Cooper's report on the phone call with Louise, Mr. Duncan's girlfriend. No one has gone in and cleared the apartment. His sweaty sheets are still on the bed. She herself has isolated the towels he has used in a plastic bag. They have been served with papers telling them that they must stay in the apartment but so far no provisions have been made to bring supplies, food etc. to them.
The CDC is concentrating on contacts, that's actually their first priority but no other organization like the Red Cross has stepped up yet. And certainly the Dallas/Texas Health officials have not jumped on this. They are probably arguing about who is responsible for providing support.

What a Clusterf***.
Well, isn't that peachy. And they wonder why people violate isolation orders??
This is the exact same shiit we saw in Africa when they quarantined a slum without making provisions for food, etc.
72-hour quarantine in Monrovia failed because people left to find food. And no provision for food is being made for this woman and her kids being there for 21 days?
When the patient was taken to the hospital, news reports said he vomited numerous times on the sidewalks, etc. between the apartment and the ambulance. I didn't hear anything about HazMat being called out.
How many dogs/cats/flies/whatever else have walked through that and tracked it somewhere else? If a fly has it on his feet and then lands on your lunch, won't that transmit it?
This has happened numerous times already and all the other ones ended up being something besides ebola. I think this one is getting huge press because of Dallas. Hopefully it will turn out negative like the rest.
It's certainly a hassle to be housebound or quarantined. But the family was brought food yesterday and a comprehensive plan to take care of their needs is being worked out today.
Quote:
"Food and other needs of the family are being worked out logistically today. Those needs will be specifically covered to allow them to stay in the house."
Remember the good old days at Ellis island? Nobody got in without quarantine. No bedbugs, no lice, no contagious diseases. With research and stringent health measures we nearly eradicated much of what ailed the common man in the US over the decades.
With the politicization of medical practice we are moving backwards in the health arena.
Think of all the people that benefitted from the inconvenience of the few. I believe that's sound ethical practice. Why can't people understand that smart health practices are not only moral but also not about discrimination in the political sense?
Liberia is going to prosecute Duncan for lying on his travel papers. We should do the same. Wonder where we'll send his medical bills? I have a feeling the American taxpayers are going to be footing that bill.
