Why are young, idealist, Obamacrats so stingy with volunteering their time?

Well, the narrative out of Washington is that the successful are evil. The "rich" (define that please) are bad people that are greedy and destroyed others to get what they have.

It is tiresome and the wrong message to send to our country but it gets the minions riled up and gets votes.

This country NEEDS our successful people to continue to be generous and caring and not be taken for granted. This "hate the rich" mantra is disgusting and is going to have disastrous results. People truly have no idea how much is done and given to those in need by these "evil" people.

It wouldn't surprise me at all to see people do less and less for those less fortunate because of this new attitude. I know it makes many of us a bit more hesitant to go out of our way to do things for others.

Is there a reason you posted a stupid partisan jab on a thread about volunteering?

I think it has to do with people are working more & simply want to spend what little free time they have with family/friends/relaxing. I keep meaning to start up with a local nature conservancy or local community garden but I simply keep forgetting to check it out. And to be a teensy bit honest, on the weekends I want to sleep in, lol. A horrible attitude, I realize.

Me personally, between working 42 hours a week, half-time in grad school, having a social life, and needing to rest once in a while, I just don't have the time or energy.

You can't find 2 hours a month to volunteer? I'm sure everyone has excuses. Most people who volunteer have busy schedules as well, they just have the will to find the time.

Fulltime student, two jobs--I still volunteer ~10 hours a month. I know a lot of people up here in "young idealist Obamacrat" land who have regular volunteer positions.

Is the lack of volunteerism split down party lines, by the way? Are liberals volunteering less than conservatives? I doubt it. Volunteering isn't--or shouldn't be--a partisan issue.

Not surprising at all. median households are losing buying power. More and more people who would normally volunteer can't even support themselves.

Most Americans are indeed working harder and longer hours, "I suspect", to make ends meet. I think jobs are more tenuous than ever. If the quote is true that average tenure at any given job is now down to just a few years, then time off for any reason starts to look like a risk.

I'm pretty lucky that my employer encourages volunteerism. Almost an oxymoron, I think, since we're paid while volunteering if for an approved event. They incentivize us to give, of both time and resources, via matching donations and etc. So, frankly, it's easier than ever to volunteer for fully-vetted charities. Especially if your peers are out there working, too: it becomes almost fun and definitely impactful to various community projects.

(A little cynically, it's great press for companies that encourage employees to volunteer, too.)
