In some cultures it's customary to have a girl's ears pierced in the hospital after birth.
A form of child abuse ? People really have gone off the deep end.
I think people have gone off the deep end. Honestly, I would like to hear from someone who supports this and ask them why it's okay to force their views on another parent.
Exactly. Some cultures do that; two I can think of, off the top of my head: The Italians and Hispanics. It's a big deal--do some folks want us to be cookie cutter images and practices???
Piercing an ear hurts for a second - kind of like a shot. Should they ban vaccinations, too? (Should I even joke about that given recent "controversy" surrounding vaccinations?? ) The baby won't remember the pain, anyway. Any residual pain is no different than soreness at an injection site from a vaccination. The piercing needs care and cleaning for some time, like the umbilical cord stump after birth. Still not seeing any issues… just some parallels.
I've never understood why anyone gets their babies ears pierced. I would never do it because it can create a metal allergy. And I say that because that is what happened to me and it sucks to only be able to wear 14kt gold or sterling.
I got mine pierced at 6. It didn't hurt at all, I just remember it sounding like a stapler.
