Hmmm, I never knew that . Growing up in and around one of the most liberal, melting pot places in the U.S. called the S.F. Bay Area the only place I saw a foreign language slightly accommodated was China Town in San Francisco and even then it was only street names in two languages. I would say up until the mid 80's all business was conducted in english and being bilingual was not required anywhere.
No one said being bilingual was required. Reread what I wrote. I said we have always accommodated languages in addition to English.
Mom has a mouth on her, calling the older woman "****". They seemed to be trying to agitate the woman even more on camera, especially the son, repeating "you are going to die really soon".

I thought he kept his cool for a remarkably long time. What I heard him repeat was, "You shouldn't talk to my mother like that. She does speak English."

Mom, not her son. He was incredibly patient. As an aside, I'm a redhead with a temper to match. I'd have knocked the woman on her can about ten seconds into that exchange.

I agree. If I had to choose one side to associate with in public, in this case it would definitely be the Latino family.
I am a transplant to South Florida. Not long ago, I was in a retail store shortly after their morning opening hours. I had to go to the bathroom very, very badly. I went over to a woman and asked where the Ladies Room was. She did not speak English (stock, cleaning crew?) and kept pointing to the Manager at the front of the store. Desperate, could not wait for that, and without even thinking, I just blurted out, "Donde esta el banyo?" from my HS Spanish course from 40 years ago. Si, Si, Si, she said, took me by the hand hand and RUSHED me to the Ladies Room. "Gracias, Senora", I said to her. I really MEANT IT too.
Want to know how happy I was that I took Spanish in school 40 years ago? Would you DEMAND that that stock clerk or cleaning woman know ENGLISH for a situation like that? lol Demand that NO FOREIGN Language ever be taught in the USA schools because we are an English Only Country?
Well, I will leave you with my husband's former boss said to immigration when he came here and was asked to say something in English. How moronic to a British Citizen? "Sir, you are speaking MY native tongue and never forget that, Yankee".
At what point did she say it? She said "you stupid!". She also said "I speak English, not good but I speak English". Her pronunciation of either one of those phrases probably sounded like "p u t a" to you.
