Think about how many people have been illegally searched or detained even without a premise.

Hopefully the myth that these things only happen to "thugs" can die now.

I am so glad this happened so the cop can be identified and lose his job over not doing his job properly and since money talks, the NYPD can be sued and changes can happen to get the police to be respectful and change their thug ways.

Ideally, everyone should be cooperative and so on. I am nice, cooperative, etc in daily life. That doesn't exempt me from being pitched as a "sassy black woman" archetype, even though I am not even remotely that person. That is the assumption about me, until I prove otherwise. And unfortunately in interactions with police, you don't really have many opportunities to prove otherwise.
I feel the same way.

And btw, Bratton says the suspect looks identical to Mr. Blake. I'd like to see this suspect and judge for myself.

It was a mistake people, put your cop killing guns away and tuck your race card up your asses. Mistakes happen and it will be rectified. Nobody is going to be fired over it and life will go on.

Who believes the myth that this only happens to "thugs"?

Not sure of the proper definition of a thug but it is not a myth that it happens much more frequently to people who are breaking the law than innocent bystanders.

More thug cops getting caught red handed abusing the law and deliberately hurting, humiliating and abusing members of the public without so much as a "excuse me sir"...

These guys in blue will not change until we make them. Don't vote for police funding in your area. If they call looking for funding tell them they need to stop beating people and need to stop being so fast to escalate to threats and violence when people request clarification as to what is happening and why.

also do five cops really need to slam anyone to the ground, are they so scared of the public that they feel our rights for respect and reasonable treatment can be voided without a moments thought...

I find it interesting and intriguing that few people have anything to say about the "witness".
THAT person made the erroneous identification that led to the cop getting out of line with the victim.
Why is nobody demanding that "the witness" be sued for false identification?
IMO, any potential lawsuits should start there, then go on to the other participants!
I think the idea that you can bear false witness (deliberate or mistake, no difference as far as I am concerned), then say "OOPS, sorry about that!" and walk away free as a bird HAS TO STOP!

here is the thing,

the witness is just a punter, they are not formally trained by the NY PD on how to conduct themselves, or for that matter anything to do with policing at all.

being able to produce a witness who ids the thief does not give the police cart blanche to tackle a person to the ground...

they are supposed to use minuimal force not maxium as a matter of course.

This is where the problem lies, the cops are so used to rough handling members of the public they think that is how policing should be conducted. The police are victims of their own abuses, they abuse and push the system to its limits, and now they are reaping what they have sowed for the last fifty years....

video is the driving force, it is exposing how they handle non violent encounters and how the police escalate,, threaten jail or beatings and how they very quickly will inflict pain, humiliation etc in order to gain instant compliance from people who may never have dealt with such violence in their lives.

For many people the most violent encounter they will ever have as adults will be with the very people tasked to protect them from such violence!!

this is at the heart of the issue.

That is a line that is tossed around very often on here. Some are too quick to always blame the victim no matter how extreme the circumstances. Video evidence seems to be the only thing people can't dispute, and some even try to do it with that.

The Asian grandfather that got bloodied by the NYPD for jaywalking wasn't a thug either.

Honestly, to make it fair. They should start stop and frisking people on Wall St. and in Midtown constantly. While their on their way to work. Who cares if they're late.

Just to show you what some people experienced in the Police State that is hopefully coming to an end.
