I'm tied to a city like your tied to this country. Stop pointing at yourself.
The point your all missing is empathy. Compassion.
What some of you fail to realize is that we've had experiences on "the other side" of these situations. We might know people or know situations that played out like this. Someone who had a history of mental illness, who received a bullet instead of help. Someone who wasn't really a threat who was killed unneccessarily.
No one is asking cops to be Superman. Many ARE asking Police to re-evaluate their training.
If Police are so concerned about all of this, start offering your own solutions and trying to block everyone else's.
The sensationalistic MSM aside; this is tragic - for everyone involved.
May God bless this young man's family and the police involved; they're the ones who have to live with this.
Mahrie.
P.S. How in the world did he get a gun in the first place? If he lived in a 'home' and was being looked after, it seems unlikely that he'd have procured a gun on his own, so how did he get it? I'd like to know this....

But how are the cops supposed to know which suspects have a "history of mental illness" when they show up at a situation? What kind of training could help them to know that?

They can't possibly know.
They get a 911 call to an extremely time sensitive situation, and ALL they know is that there's a man there with a gun. They don't have time to read about his life history; they're there to protect whomever needs protection from 'the man with the gun.'
Just one little query; how do you drop a gun unless you already have it in your hand? How does getting shot for "reaching for it" jibe with being told to "drop the gun"???
Sir, would you please pick that gun up so you can drop it when I holler drop it. Just don't "reach for it" or you'll get shot. Just sorta snuggle it into your hand all cautious like, so you can then drop it ....OK? Mmmmmm
And if he'd done what was being demanded - what happened to "hands up"? - they wouldn't have shot him. But no, he could possibly have been reaching for a weapon so... THAT'S WHAT HAPPENS! You get your azz shot! Even if the PRESIDENT OF THE UNITED STATES tells you that you don't have to listen to the police, YOU STILL DO!
