Nooooo...... I have a child starting high school next fall who really wants to major in some sort of computer game making in college. I'd like him outside and in the fresh air more. As a parent, I can see this as a fun hobby, but not as actual sport.

Yeah don't crap on your kids dream. If he wants to get into programming there are far worse majors in college and he can do a ton of things other than make video games. Not that there is anything wrong with video games or making them.
I agree that it is ridiculous to give scholarships for playing video games. But I think the large majority of sports scholarships are ridiculous. I am not a college football or basketball fan, in fact I don't think I have ever been to a college football or basketball game, but at least some of those football and basketball scholarships generate money for the college. What good do track, wrestling, volleyball or swimming scholarships do for the university?
