Take a look at a picture of lady justice and see what she's holding up in her left hand. What do you think that scale represents?

I think it is trying to say the side of the scale with the most money "wins"!

The base injustice in the matter of wounded soldiers is the very wealthy rarely become soldiers so never face the risk. War, like Justice, is a rich man's game and a poor man's fight.

Yeah-that's the most absurd thing. Some still deny the disparity in how the poor are treated.

It is what it is. For those who study history, this will turn itself over, but will always return...as long as mankind walks the earth.

I agree it's an injustice, but it is our innate nature. You have takers and you have givers. You have those who wish to rule over others. You have 'Chiefs' and you have 'Indians.'

'Indians,' although being the majority...are passive and just want to have a decent life and raise their children.

Then you have those who seek power, always a bad sign.

I love this statement. Eloquent and spot on.

Other key points:

a) dropped out of highschool
b) Illegal

Those factor in BIGTIME along with what we can all seem to agree about the wealthy having better lawyers etc. and getting better deals. (If not outright bribery etc. in some cases)

Being Illegal is what probably screwed the kid the most.

Give me a Jaime Delgado honor student that is of legal status and I seriously doubt he is tried as an adult.

A lower income black man killed 4 people in an infamous drunken crash in the Chicago burbs in the 90's when I lived there and wound up spending about 3.5 years in jail of a 7 year or so sentence and he was around 26 when he did that.

P.S. Please note that the Affluenza kid has not completed his punishment yet. His ending sentence will likely wind up including prison time.

So we all remember that horrible affluenza kid who has further proven he is a callous douche bag since getting off from his DUI.

Then we have another Texan, Jaime Arellano, who had a similar case but was sentenced to 20 years and was tried and an adult. He was the same age as Couch. But he didn't have rich parents to fall back on.

Same charges, very different result. This is the invisible inequality that doesn't get measured easily, and causes wildly different outcomes.

Rich:

Poor:

And if you want to learn more? Check out The Divide by Matt Taibbi. It's a whole book full.
Arelliano is an illegal immigrant, with limited English and broke.

He/ she with the better lawyer usually has a better outcome in the court system.

Agree on your book recommendation.

Of course there is still a chance that the affluenza teen will get his.

Nope, it looks like he gets about 3 months of jail time and on probation, AGAIN! What's to stop him?

What happened to justice being blind? Nothing. But a little money in the right palms helps justice "see a little better"

Is not the presiding Judge in the affluenza case more to blame for being so foolish as to accept the defense tactic?
