It's not McAfee antivirus, the company, that wants to hack the phone. It's John McAfee who is no longer associated with the company, but who is running for president as a Libertarian.

Also note that he thinks his own antivirus program is awful.

McAfee said in 2013 that despite not having anything to do with the antivirus software for more than 20 years, he still received reams of email correspondence from frustrated and angry PC users, and this prompted him to create the spook video.

I am in favor of less government involvement in our lives. BUT, this is an issue of National Security and I believe that Apple needs to man up and do the right thing by encrypting the phone.

That said, 2 things come to my feeble mind:

Why the Hell are we hearing about this months after the event?

And, I believe that this is a smoke screen and the FBI and Homeland Security have already opened the phone. This way the bad guys still feel that they are safe.

We have to nail the terrorists to the wall! This is a very dark and scary time for all of us

I'm aware that McAfee no longer owns "McAfee" but he did/does have his own encryption program(s).

Sorry but they are not taking the side of the terrorist but the side of the average Joe.

That's the argument they want you to fall for. There is nothing on that cell phone they could not get through records of the carrier or the cloud storage.

Don't fall for their lies.

There are tons of kids out there (I work with quite a few.) who are fully capable of this type of hacking.

Todays era is a completely different ball game. The systems used to encrypt today can be impossible to break. The software can change the key each time it sends a burst of data. The combinations are infinite.

WSJ has a unique view too.

As I said, it doesn't matter who owns the phone itself. You don't own the Software. You are licensed to use it, period. Read your agreements. Just because you buy a Computer, for instance, with Microsoft windows on it, does not make you the owner of that Program. Microsoft still owns it, and all you have is permission to use it. and its protected by a license key. You can sell your Computer or it can change owners a dozen times, but the software always is owned by the creator.

Everyone has their own "View" on this, and the ones that are against Apple are the ones that have the least knowledge about what the Government is "Really" asking for, and what the implications are, (Worldwide also) and what can happen if they attempt this. This is one Box that should not be opened.

Yes, it does smack of marketing and appeal to the public's pocketbooks

I don't care who or when the password was set---
I don't understand how you can claim you want to protect individuals' right to privacy when you have broken that vow in the past--
UNLESS you decided it was to your advantage to stop doing it...
So I read that the govt--some faction--had accessed the phone and then changed the password
Basically f-ed up so that it may have lost data
Not same as having phone wo ANY access
So now seems like Apple does have legit reason not to comply

It's disappointing to see you take the side of Hackers and Dictatorships all over the World, by wanting them to have access to people that are fighting for human rights. I would bet that if one of your family members was an activist in another Country, and if their phone was hacked, and the Government there retrieved their encrypted data, arrested them, and jailed or executed them, you would change your tune too.

I also bet if your phone was hacked, and identity stolen, youd be the first one screaming for more "Security" for your Data on your phone, right??

How many "normal" people would want to lock out a Manufacturer software update? I am aware of the option for Programs and Applications, but not one for Verizon updates or Samsung Firmware. Would not lock that out in the first place, even if it was there. You don't control all the features on your Phone. You can't turn off the GPS. You can deny permission to Applications for its use, but you can not shut it off. You may be shocked by what can be done with your Phone from a remote location, with the proper equipment, that is beyond your control. Remember, the Carriers have been working with the NSA for years, in secret with secret court orders. You have no idea what access they have been given that's built in. They control your phone if they want, not you. Your Encryption system is the only private thing you have .

I don't leave mine on all the time. Only if I need to. The Government wanted to "Chip" people years ago, so they would know where they where all the time, and it was quickly dismaiised. Until now, that is. They got the next best thing. They got folks to buy their own "Chips" and carry them on their person. Problem solved.

I believe Apple is protecting Apple.

It makes all the Appelites warm and fuzzy believing the phone cant be unlocked or that it would take a lot of resources to build a key. They have it. They just dont want you to know about it.

If government asked a local craftsman around here to come to the aid of his country to top terrorism by opening a door or build a key...there would be a fight to see who would be first in line to do it for free.
