Clowns don't scare me. Hollywood does. If this is a marketing ploy to bring attention to a new movie, the public should completely boycott the movie. Let it bomb at the box office.
Hollywood used to take what scared us (spiders, bees, rats), and used them to scare us even more. Now they take innocent things children enjoy (clowns, Santa, dolls, etc)...and use them to scare the hell out of children. That's twisted if you ask me. Nothing is taboo anymore.
These didn't scare me when I was a kid. They were natural things. Clowns looked very unnatural and menacing to me with their painted faces. I didn't know the word "grotesque" then but that's what I would have called them if I did.
There was one clown, however, I did like. That was Emmet Kelly. I loved his sweeping the spotlight routine. For those who may not have heard of him, here's a link.
you know, with clowns (as well as sharks and tigers)...their noses are very sensitive and a forcefull punch will knock them over like a 3-legged chair faster than you can say Pagliacci. If you happen to encounter a clown, no matter how benign he (or she) appears, don't hesitate getting the first punch in. Their blade is often hidden within their billowy sleeves and they can flash it out in an instant and carve you up.
I never knew clowns were scary until my family went to a Christmas program in the early 60s. My cousin who was around 3 years old had an extreme reaction to the clowns. She literally flipped out, started screaming at the top of her lungs, etc., meanwhile I was just bewildered by her reaction. I don't think you could pin her reaction on to a movie. It's not likely her parents would have taken her to a scary clown movie at age 3.
Kids get scared like that from Santa too. They just look weird and people act weird around them.

OMG! I was sitting in my office (door closed) feeling cranky because of a headache and I read this response! Thanks for the laugh - my headache is actually a little better.
I cannot imagine any child walking up to a clown in the woods. In the circus a clown might not be scary, but to see one in the woods?? It would be terrifying just because it's so out of place.
Years ago there was a multi-level Halloween haunted house in Philly, one floor of which had nothing but clowns and mirrors. I never went to it, but yikes!!
I admit when I first saw this story scrolling at the bottom of the TV, Pennywise is who I thought of.
