Miami Marlins pitcher Jose Fernandez was killed early Sunday in a boating crash, according to a baseball source.
Fernandez, 24, was originally scheduled to start Sunday, in what have been his likely final outing of the season.
Fernandez was the team’s first-round draft pick in 2011, was the National League rookie of the year in 2013. He was finishing up on his finest season in the majors.
Sounds like they were in a go fast boat and didn't see the jetty or some mechanical issue caused them to wreck. Sad to hear people die when they were just out on a fun day
Presumably he was at the Marlins' game last night, 7:10 start, meaning he went out on the boat well after dark. The boat was discovered crashed with all deceased aboard around 3:30 am by the Coast Guard, who said speed was likely a factor as the boat was severely damaged. No one wore life jackets. This is undoubtedly sad, especially because he was so young and his girlfriend was pregnant which he just announced on 9/19, but it is plain stupid and reckless to be out on a boat on the ocean in the dark without a life jacket and speeding. Unfortunate accident but an avoidable one. And that's the worst part - his life didn't have to end this way.
Recent Coast Guard reports indicate that Jose Fernandez was killed by the impact, that he didn't own the boat and wasn't at the helm.
I believe that the owner of the boat has liability here. I wonder if the yet to be born infant has a cause of action. Jose claimed the child as his. Doubtless DNA verification will be done.
