Not anymore.

Rome became the latest city to abandon a bid for the 2024 Summer Games when it withdrew on Tuesday because of worries over the cost.

Budget concerns have led city after city to drop their Olympic dreams in recent years. Hamburg, Germany, previously bailed on 2024. Stockholm and Krakow, Poland, pulled the plug on bids for the 2022 Winter Olympics, which were later awarded to Beijing.

An Olympic host city has to plan, pay for and construct massive infrastructure projects. Security costs can run into the billions of dollars. Thousands of hotel rooms must be built to house athletes and tourists.

Nobody want to host the Olympics? So are we just ignoring Paris, Budapest, and Los Angeles? Paris is considered the favorite to win the bid, which is to be announced next year.

I know they had considered doing this in one place, which frankly makes more sense. The cities that host lose tons of money in the short and long run, while corruption surrounds the games every single time from the private contractors can swoop in and steal overpaid deals to the officials who give them preference.

They didn't have to deal with an oligarch organization like the olympic committee.

The countries most interested in hosting are usually corrupt dictatorships like China, Russia, the 'stans. Corrupt leaders and organizations work well together.

Having the olympics in the same place every year would get really boring imo, especially the winter Olympics where the variety of the venues are important.

Might be boring but it could help to justify the cost of the thousands of hotel rooms and assorted eating establishments built solely for the Olympics.

They ought to hold the winter games in Phoenix so it's not so cold.

Personally I am glad Hamburg dropped it. This is a green, quiet, beautiful city, it does not need a million foreigners from all the world milling around throwing trash everywhere. The Russians can take them if they want to.

I think sustainability and re-use is now part of the bidding process, I know London has put it's venues and the Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park to good use.
