NEW YORK (AP) — A 6-week-old baby died Thursday when her stroller accidentally plunged down an empty elevator shaft in a Brooklyn building.

The infant's mother was waiting with the stroller on the 23rd floor of an apartment building in Coney Island around 11:40 a.m., officials said.

When the doors opened, the woman stepped forward and both she and the stroller fell down the shaft and landed on the elevator car, which was out of service eight stories below, police said.

A mechanic who had been working on the elevator heard the mother's screams and helped pull her to safety, police said.

That is AWFUL.

Ever since that one show about lawyers (can't remember the name) killed off one of their main characters by having her step into an empty elevator shaft - I am totally paranoid about making sure the elevator is actually THERE before I step in.

It was likely hard to see because of the stroller in front of her. But always look! My friend stepped off an elevator and it was a couple feet up and she ruined her knee.

Elevators creep me out. I always wait, because there was some glitch a few years back and some guy stepped on. I don't know if the doors closed but the elevator SHOT up and literally tore him in half. The only "good" think is he died so fast, there's no way he felt it.

Default The Paternoster: Europe's Doorless Elevator

I have used a Paternoster (doorless elevator) before in Germany (maybe the one below), and you do have to keep your wits about you:

Germany still has plenty of these.

The German word is Paternosteraufzügen
