For the same reason that no one brings up 'pro wrestling' when complaining about fixing in professional sports.

You're welcome. I particularly remember Carol Burnett's story when they said she was one of the few exceptions to successfully sue the tabloids.

There are really people who take the National Enquirer seriously?
Next, I suppose you will say that some people believe what is written in MAD magazine!
In my humble opinion, believing tabloids is on the same par as believing MSNBC, and lately, CNN. And, of course, all the networks. They all use smear tactics.

I haven't thought about Bat Boy in a while.

Printed tabloids papers go back for a long time. "Fake" news is really nothing new even online; it's been around quite a while. You know when you read some news stories and down at the bottom of the same webpage are like ads. The news media pages want you to click on the teaser stories on the sides, like targeted advertising.

In this sentence, I am linking to an online NPR article from 2014 complains about what I am referring to.

My grandmother use to get the National Enquirer all the time. It was "real" news to her. I remember trying to explain to her that is wasn't news, but trashy gossip or fake stories. She got so mad at me.

When the National Enquirer actually did a good job of unearthing a scandal (John Edwards) they had a hard time getting anyone to believe them because they have usually been regarded as a National Joke. They were right though that time.

While I agree that the tabloids are 99% nonsense and mostly comic relief, (BatBoy was awesome). Some times they do get it right, Wasn't it the Enquirer that scooped the entire MSM about John Edwards cheating scandal?
Of course it is possible that the MSM new about the cheating but buried it because he was a Democrat.

They also broke the Rush Limbaugh Oxycontin scandal.

Then the rest of the media picked it up.

Warrants Detail Rush Limbaugh's Drug Use | The Smoking Gun

Fun fact: The National Enquirer also broke the Palin scandals.

The National Enquirer claimed to have an exclusive account of Bristol Palin's pregnancy.

The National Enquirer was also preparing to publish a story (in the September 15, 2008 issue) alleging that Palin had an affair with her husband's business partner, Brad Hanson.

Answering John McCain's threat of a lawsuit, a spokesman for the paper declared: The National Enquirer's coverage of a vicious war within Sarah Palin's extended family includes several newsworthy revelations, including the resulting incredible charge of an affair plus details of family strife when the Governor's daughter revealed her pregnancy. Following our John Edwards' exclusives, our political reporting has obviously proven to be more detail-oriented than the McCain campaign's vetting process. Despite the McCain camp's attempts to control press coverage they find unfavorable, The Enquirer will continue to pursue news on both sides of the political spectrum.

Now it seems that BreitBart, InfoWars, World Net Daily and Liberty Writers News etc. have become the internet tabloids.
