This story highlights a very critical factor in these types of random assaults where you are cornered and have nowhere to run.
And that is to go into all out survival mode and do everything you can to go on the offensive. This is no time to be squeamish, use any and all 'dirty' moves.
There was a jogger who was tragically killed last August in New York city. Apparently she put up a fight based on the physical evidence. Not to second guess that situation, but don't hesitate to try and gouge out the attacker's eyes, bite off ears, anything to give you that time to run away.
Days after successfully repelling a brutal attack while out for a run at a park in Seattle, one jogger has gotten her stride back.
Kelly Herron, 36, spoke to ABC News about how a day of marathon training turned into a runner's nightmare situation, and how she countered the attack the moment she said she realized "this doesn't have to be a fair fight."
I taught both my girls to always be on guard, always stick together, fair fights are for suckers and the quote from Field Marshall Gregory Zhukov. The end of war is victory, all else is nonsense.
They had a few scuffles growing up and didn't lose one of them.
Any fool that thinks women can't defend themselves is an idiot. They just need to be taught how sometimes.
Doesn't matter your age, gender etc. it's ALWAYS good to know a little self defense.
I have a friend from college that got beaten during riots after the Rodney King verdict. Great person, just caught in the wrong place. Last I saw they're fairly accomplished at marshal arts, I suspect as a reaction to such unprovoked assault.
Sad that so many women have to be put into this situation and really happy that she was able to turn the tables on her attacker. The reality is that very few women are able to truly neutralize a male attacker especially a strong male attacker which this guy probably was not.
Most attackers aren't expecting a throat punch, groin strike or eye gouge to be the first reaction from their intended victim.
That first instant a woman knows she's under attack is the best chance to immobilize an assailant possibly 100 lbs heavier.
Ms. Herron was saved by training. Being a marathon runner she was probably much smaller than the average man. Most women could at least increase their chances of survival significantly. Buying 10 seconds to get away is all you need.
Mace would take a couple seconds to be ready to use, unless carried in hand.

Reason: Deleted gun reference as per mod note in thread
Some years ago where I live, a female hiker was kidnapped and eventually killed by a drifter who had a track record of murdering hikers.
She had come up on a long weekend to hike on a mountain. There were lots of other people out hiking and he fell in with her and talked to her. He waited until they were alone before he attacked.
She had a black belt and she used her skills to the best of her ability. Her killer admitted that they fought for a very long time before he ultimately overpowered her. I imagine exhaustion finally overtook her, since there was no where to run from him in the wilderness. He just wouldn't give up, and she could only defend herself for so long.
Sure, it's great to know some self-defense and it will save some women. But until men stop being the main murderers and rapists and performers of violence in general, women will continue to be unsafe.
