On a recent trip with my wife we stayed at several places and at one I noticed there was a bit of black tape over the smoke detector. I thought someone did it to cover the little light that sometimes flashes but maybe they were paranoid about a possible spy camera?
I do sweep hotel rooms for oddities when we first arrive because you will never know what you might find.
For years -- before the whole reveal from Edward Snowden I have had black tape on my laptop and phone camera.
I lived in NYC for so many years w tons of journalist and people really hip to this.
I've not been in other cities where I saw it but I know people are doing it after Snowden told them you are all being recorded. Oh and Tyra Banks had a hacker inside her phone watching her get out of shower.
Also, years and years ago before I had the tape on I figured out I had a hacker inside my yahoo messenger webcam. I confronted him (had an idea who would be so sneaky and bored) and he admitted.

I still keep 'em covered. Ever since that High School handed out laptops to the kids and then they found they were watching them all. Usually in their bedrooms.

That was also many years ago, cams get smaller and smaller. It wont be long when cameras can be had that cannot be seen by the naked eye, or so small, its not even noticeable. Wouldnt surprise me if they were already here to some degree.
People who rent from Airbnb should always check for these things.
I've always thought about this when I've rented vacation homes. For some reason it never bothered me. They'd probably get bored watching me sit around their house and read. And if my significantly older husband's with me and we get intimate, they'll probably turn the camera off!
A lot of people value privacy though, so definitely should not be taken lightly. I wouldn't really care all too much however if I knew the vacation home/hotel had a camera in my room. I don't know, maybe I'm an exhibitionist!

That is disgusting. I didn't hear about it. Did they go to prison? Those were kids. Even worse than us adults being filmed.

This creates major anxiety in me. I wish I could be like the other lady who said she didn't care and was an exhibitionist. A healthier way to be in long run.

I don't think any of them went to prison (although maybe someone should have). I recall when it first came to light there were articles with some of the teens very upset because they had bathrooms in their bedrooms and showers and had no idea the cams were operating in the laptops. I believe they have been sued a few times now and I think finally started offering settlements.
There's a fair amount of info out there is you want to google it.
It happened in a suburb of Philadelphia.

I can understand if there are cameras at entrances for safety sake and I can almost understand one in the kitchen and living room area but certainly never the bedroom. Signs or something in the rental contract should explain if there are cameras and where.

It really doesnt bother me to be honest, but Im a divorced guy in his mid 40s, so if they are secretly recording me staying overnight somewhere, they are going to be pretty disappointed and bored watching the footage.
These people who set up secret cameras are really out to capture attractive females, either undressing or having sex with another attractive person....thats really the only people they are interested in recording.
