I’m looking at the “before” pictures and wondering where the piers are? Did they really think they could make a span that wide without support. The trestles appear to be supports for the roof, not actual stress-bearing support for the bridge.

Dang this is so sad. Especially since they built this bridge so people could cross the street safely because someone died recently.

Looking at the debris it appears as though the construction was incomplete and the cable stays had yet to be installed.

Here is what it would have looked like when complete. Notice the cables: FIU students in Sweetwater will get bridge across dangerous road | Miami Herald

Yes, construction was supposed to be complete by the end of the year.

Ahh! Okay, that makes more sense. I wonder why they let cars drive under it without those cables?
