"At this point, they're trained on five different odors," explained the Normal Police Department's assistant police chief, Steve Petrilli, a former K-9 handler. "Once they're programed with that, you can't just deprogram them." The dogs are also trained against being social in order to be effective workers, which led Larner to suggest "a number" of the K-9s would have to be euthanized in the event that marijuana is legalized, The Pantagraph writes.
Illinois police claim if marijuana is legalized, they'll have to kill their police dogs

I'm speechless lol

Oh give me a break. "If you legalize marijuana, I'm going to hold my breath until I turn blue and die".

Drug dogs HAVE to be social, or they wouldn't be allowed to intermingle in schools and at airports. These dogs are not feral; in fact, they're well-trained to behave socially in crowds of a variety of types of people.

B.S.

Retired police dogs as well as bomb-sniffing and other military dogs are made available for adoption all the time. They often are adopted by their handlers, who take them home to live with their families. Others are adopted by regular people. They take quite readily to the couch-potato life of a family pet.

If the dogs were so antisocial, they would not be able to work as part of a police team.

These people are lying or crazy.

Ditto. Worst case scenario they would have to put an add in for some police dog adoptions. Those dogs would be adopted in no time. A family across the street from me has a German Shepard that was a drug dog. He's just fine. Keeps an eye on you when you walk by though but he's so old and jaded now nothing impresses him anymore. He just lays around in the sun or shade all the time.

I'm not.

Such a reactionary response from those with power is utterly predictable.

Law enforcement should be concerned with only that: enforcing the law that is enacted by elected civilian government. But, as usual, they want more. They want to dictate what the law will be.

Happily, they can't seem to come up with anything less stupid than "Legalize weed and the doggies get whacked!", a transparent emotional ploy so inane that it makes reefer madness look wise and considered by comparison.

99.99999999999999% of cops in K-9 units would probably like to knock the head off the cop* that said this.

*emphasizing a cop. A single cop said this. It is not, as far as I can tell, an official policy in Illinois, as the title seems to imply, much less anywhere else in the US.

Reminds me of this "National Lampoon" cover.

Translation;

"Since any logic for banning dope fails, we will appeal to emotion."

"We also will add our jobs may be in danger, since chasing dope crime is a big part of our police work, and is one of the easiest, hence the best bang for the buck."

I love this post! It sounds exactly like that: "If you legalize marijuana, I'm going to hold my breath until I turn blue and die".

Someone should send who ever said that to bed without dinner.

Its maybe the stupidest argument I have seen against legalization...and I have seen some stupid ones. Most drug dogs just sit next to something that gives off the scent. Even if they kept up that behavior...what awful things would come of it?

As someone said, retired police, drug, bomb etc dogs are adopted out. If this were the case, they would have to be killing all the dogs when they retire.

I'll take lying for $20 Alex.

IMO, here's what would really happen if pot was legalized. Police depts. would not be able to justify budget increases, and would probably have to lay off some of their police force. "Oh noes! We can't have THAT!"
