I just read the link. They made them give the COTS back at 4am, not just the blankets! Per other passengers, flight included elderly in wheelchairs who also had to give them back.
One passenger said it was a 7:30 flight, but they made everyone wait and didn't call off the flight till midnight, when it was too late for the airline to get people rooms.
Why doesn't United open up the lounge they have for their premier guests in such situations? Wouldn't it be more humane and less expensive than paying $150 per delayed passenger?
Its "Bad" but from a "Operational" point of view, the Airport Need to move all the cot'ed bodies out of the way before the morning rush start to arrive in the airport in the next hour or so.
So I could understand why they did it. But they should have thought about it the night before, and setup on the LandSide of the airport in conference rooms, training room, etc. But then everyone would then need to re-clear security.
Not that United hasn't brought a lot of its poor reputation on itself, but the being awakened at 4:00 a.m. and having the blankets taken back appears to have been the work of airport staff, not United.
I would have said, I just shat in this one. Are you sure you want it back?
I worked for an airline and I can tell you.... somebody else probably shat on it before you did. If a stain wasn't visible.... they'd just re-folded it give it to the next passenger.

This.
I'm getting a little tired of stories where people get outraged and blame the wrong parties for stuff. Yeah, bad situation to be in, but pointing fingers at united for the 4 AM rousting? People should get their facts straight before posting blame all over the internet. I sometimes wonder if these companies couldn't counter sue for libel in such instances? And did you see how much miss thing wants to be compensated? Talk about milking a situation!
