“A Texas mother is complaining that a Southwest Airlines employee mocked her 5-year-old daughter's name, which is Abcde.

Traci Redford said she and young Abcde (pronounced "Ab-city") were flying from Santa Ana, California, to their home in El Paso, Texas, a few weeks ago when a gate agent began mocking the girl's name.”

(as reported by “AB-see Seven”. Sorry, couldn’t resist )

Yeah, the agent was wrong for posting the boarding pass online, but, IMHO, she shouldn’t be faulted for laughing because that IS a RIDICULOUS name that I’m sure was purposely picked to draw attention. Mission Accomplished. This child is going to have to deal with people mocking her name for a LONG time to come (never mind issues with future employment).

Agent is wrong, but damn, that parent is an idiot and deserves to be mocked for naming the kid such a stupid name.

This is just the beginning for the kid...I am sure she will use an alternative name pretty quickly.

This.

Being stupid is one thing. Saddling your child with evidence of your stupidity is another.

That said, the SWA rep was completely out of line. She won't be the last in this child's life, though.

It sounds as if the employee was making fun of the child's name, not the child herself. She should have been making fun of the mother for giving the girl such a,silly name. And btw, what does the fact the girl has epilepsy have to do with anything? That wasn't being made fun of either.

I wonder if the name has some meaning in some other language.

Sure. The employee was behaving foolishly but the mother is overreacting. That can't make the kid feel good either.

I wonder what that Southwest employee thought she gained by mocking a child's name. Did it make her feel important? More powerful? Was her goal to humiliate the child or the mother, both of whom were apparently strangers to her? Had they done something earlier that made her angry? What did she hope to accomplish with her cruelty? What did she think she was making better by mocking the child's name (something over which the child had no control)? What a miserable, sad life she must have to feel that ridiculing someone who had done her no harm would make her feel better.

Yes, the child's name is odd and will likely cause her some problems over her lifetime, but an adult in a relative position of authority making fun of her name doesn't do anyone any good. There was no excuse for that behavior, regardless or what she or anyone else might think of the child's name.

Mocking someone's name is very unprofessional.

Naming your kid Abcde is foolish. Save the strange names for cats and dogs.

It's the first 5 letters of the English alphabet. So no, it doesn't have some special meaning in another language.

Do these people not understand what a disservice they perform when saddling a child with a name like that?

Imagine 20 years in the future getting a resume with Abcde as the first name. Next.

It sure beats "shi-thee-ad" which I've heard used as a name...
