Decades of violence across the country. I wouldn't call that "a few thugs here and there".

Gainesville was the first place I ever felt I needed to carry a firearm. It was during the crack epidemic in the 80's.

Locking up the restaurant at night and early morning openings were prime time for robberies. Thankfully, I never had to use my sidearm to protect myself or my staff.

That being said, it was terminally stupid to be handing out money late at night in a place like Gainesville.

According to the article, the police were already on their way to the Waffle House at the time of the incident because the restaurant was nearing its maximum capacity. Given that, I'm not sure what the victim was thinking. If he had enough money to cover everyone in the restaurant, he would be seen as having a lot of money and thus an attractive target for robbery. On the other hand, if he didn't have enough money for everyone, anyone who was left out might feel resentful, or even angry. It appears that this is what actually happened.

Mind you, I'm not excusing the greedy person who argued with him because she wanted free money, much less the POS who shot the man. I'm just saying that this person, well-meaning though he may have been, used very poor judgment. And, unfortunately, paid the ultimate penalty for it.

As another poster said, nothing good ever happens after midnight. There is a lot of truth to that saying.

The death penalty is most often imposed and therefore correlates most strongly, in situations where the victim and killer are strangers.

People from the middle to upper classes are less heavily represented in these sorts of impersonal, violent street crimes or home invasions. They command, and juries will often deliver, capital verdicts not simply because the perpetrators are poor, but because of the terror that apparently random acts of extreme violence elicit in others.

That is why it appears to many people as a very biased punishment.

Anytime I see the title "Waffle House," I know it can't be good! They don't get the classiest clientele in the first place.

Last week a guy got beat up by 4 different people because he was drunk, and he didn't want to wait in line. All involved were white males mind you and it was 2am in the morning
No waffle house for me after 8pm

I've only been once, and I didn't find the food or service to be that good. I'll take Cracker Barrel any day.

That adds nothing "more to the story," simply because investigators stated that they're looking into whether the two knew each other and had some issue. Isn't that routine? (Yes.)

According to witnesses, the kerfuffle ensued after the killer's female friend confronted the victim because she didn't get hers.
