That's like referring to 10 billion as 10,000 million. While correct, it's needless.
Anyway, given that global wealth is a fraction of 1 quadrillion, the 'value' of that asteroid is meaningless. Also, do people not understand the concept of supply and demand? There simply isn't the demand for a supply of iron constituting orders of magnitude beyond what is available on Earth at present production rates.
Exactly, we have a global glut of steel production. Why go to space when we have enough here?
"There's an extremely rare metallic asteroid lurking between Mars and Jupiter, and it's worth more than the entire global economy. Now, the Hubble Space Telescope has given us a closer look at the object, which is worth an estimated $10,000 quadrillion."
The space rock is about the size of West Virginia and made of iron and nickel. NASA is sending a probe in 2022. We should also get the Space Force up there to guard it.
Interesting. Thanks for posting.
But it's out there between Mars and Jupiter, so it will never be used.
I personally think it is just more nonsense from Space X and NASA, who ares making a real fine living convincing people that we are going to mars and that we will be colonizing the moon and space and on and on. We will be doing none of those things. Even though we could. Probes and robots will do what needs to be done.
Reading that there is something in existence worth 10 gazillion dollars (because thats how improbable the actual number is) just made me realize that the value of things on our planet is completely worthless. There is no system in place to even recognize something that "valuable".
NASA doesnt even have the ability to know what metals compose an asteroid.
This is so untrue because astronomers can tell many of the stars and planet's composition from looking at the color elements. Gases produced in the atmosphere tell us alot about the chemical composition and what material makes them.
We know Titan has methane in the atmosphere because it is blue or green.
An asteroid composition can be determined through infrared imaging and looking at the spectrum of light it reflects from the sun when visible. Of course we don't know what contents are inside.
But based on astro geologists findings of many other asteroids that we've landed on. We can tell what are some common elements.
That is why Elon Musk created SpaceX because he believes in commercial space. From rocket transport to space mining, it will be a huge commodity in the future. If we can capture just 1 asteroid we may find all sorts of precious material. There are so many asteroids out there.

Which is why we've arrived at the point, where the planet has been toasted, irrevocably. The economic systems (yes, Socialism is guilty, too) never factored in the value of a functional, pristine environment.
