That’s true. Numbers of this scale are seldom used in society. Those of us who regularly follow developments in astronomy are quite in tune with such figures.

The space rock is about the size of West Virginia and made of iron and nickel. NASA is sending a probe in 2022. We should also get the Space Force up there to guard it.
So? Ever hear of supply and demand? Damn, in between the orbit of Mars and Jupiter? Even at our closest point in our orbits that's a long way away don't you think?

Send in the Space Force? I ain't going.

There's a guy called Isaac Arthur on youtube who discusses stuff like this. Go watch so of his stuff.

Wouldn't it be easier for all of us just to move to the asteroid?

This is why China and Eli Musk are desperate to get to Mars. They wanna conquer and claim the asteroid for themselves. Musk recently stated that Mars won't be governed by Earth's international laws. Mars will have its own laws and judicial system.

That will depend entirely on the extent of the colonization. If Mars, or any other Solar System body were to receive an influx of colonists, it’s reasonable to assume that they would seek independence from Earth.

control comes from force. so it really depends on what kind of force earth based nations are willing or able to establish on mars or any space colony to maintain its rule over the inhabitants. people dont generally volunteer to be ruled by some outside party.

It would be similar to how the US got its independence. Once there are a lot of people concentrated in a location, they will seek to self govern. Keep in mind though, that I’m talking about a large civilian population existing on Mars. The first explorers would be scientists, so their journey would be limited.

The only entity that will determine who's in charge is the HOA.

ASTEROIDS R US
Why the fuss?
Ignore the "Cash value" - that's based on money madness. And the current amount of circulating money tokens is nowhere near the NASA estimate, making the claim a nullity. It's like saying the asteroid is worth a billion Marilyn Monroes. (Yes, she's dead, and so is money)

WHAT YOU REALLY SHOULD BE EXCITED ABOUT

Scientists think the M-type (metallic) asteroid 16 Psyche is comprised mostly of metallic iron and nickel similar to Earth’s core.
https://solarsystem.nasa.gov/asteroi...yche/in-depth/
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/16_Psyche
16 Psyche (asteroid) mass : (2.23±0.36)×10^19 kg

From this one asteroid, one could build 546,256,494,080 battleships of the Iowa Class.
IOWA class battleship weighs 45,000 tons (40,823,313.3 kg, or 40,823 metric tonnes)

{Of course, we’d rather build autonomous space colonies, instead of armored dreadnoughts in space.}
An O’Neill cylinder 5 miles x 20 miles, 1304 decks, holding approx. 10.36 million crew.
Massing 26,742 megatonnes per colony

ONE ASTEROID could be the source of an
Estimated 833,895 space colonies (30 year construction cycle)
Hosting population of 8.637E+12 (8.637 trillion)
(Reach that population roughly before 2700 A.D.)
Surface area equivalent to 877 Earths
9.848 billions per equivalent Earth

In summation, we can build a huge number of giant autonomous self sufficient orbiting space colonies, habitats and vivariums, hosting huge bioregions and wildlife habitat as well as human habitat and food production.

In other words, we're "good" for the next 2000 - 3000 years of expansion in the solar system. When we begin expanding to other star systems, at sublight speed, we will eventually fill the galaxy in half a billion years, give or take a millennia.

That should cheer everyone up!

/addendum/
[] Over 600,000 asteroids are listed with “economic value” denominated in trillions and quadrillions of “dollars.”

Let's go get it. Who's with me?
