I do. The tolerance for drunk driving isn't what it used to be, and combine that with going 156 in a residential zone.... it's cold blooded murder in my book.
In your book, and most other peoples book. Yet we have all seen how the rich and famous buy their way out of trouble, whether it be "stars", political figures, athletes, etc., etc.
Even if this guy does pay a price and does some jail time, do you really think it will be the same as Joe sixpack would pay?
People who drive drunk normally aren't driving 150+ in a residential area, that's the part that doesn't make sense.
What likely happened is he was probably in some argument with his girl in the passenger seat, and being immature, decided to express his anger and adrenaline through the accelerator. Being drunk brings out the immaturity and impulsiveness in a lot of young people.
In life, everyone makes mistakes, but when the mistake results in robing someone of their life, it becomes irreversible. Driving drunk 150+ through residential neighborhood, is a mistake that no one can afford to make and that family is going to sue the hell out of him a long with the criminal charges he'll face.
The video is also crazy, because it shows him and his girl crying and yelling for help(for themselves), with no regard of the person in the SUV burning in flames they just crashed into.
Speculation by attorneys familiar with sentencing practices in Las Vegas say he'll get "2 to 20 yrs in prison."
A wealthy Vegas real estate exec, Scott Gragson, got sentenced to 8-20 years last year for a drunk driving fatality, and he's white. Ruggs is definitely going away.
Well, there were already statements from at least two attorneys who are going to investigate the incident on his behalf. I doubt those are public defenders.
Do people remember the case of NFL player Donte Stallworth? Dude drove drunk and ran over a guy and killed him. He copped a plea and did less than 30 days in jail. Was back in the league a year later.
What's there to investigate? He was driving drunk as a skunk, 156 mph through a residential zone and killed an innocent woman.
Case closed, the attorneys should find something else to do.
But he would also be charged with vehicular homicide which carries a 25 to life sentence in Nevada. Given that she didn't actually die from the accident but suffered by burning to death, her screams being heard by witnesses, would probably play substantially in his sentencing and the fact that he was driving at such a reckless speed.
Vehicular homicide in Nevada requires three prior DUI convictions, otherwise the charge would be Vehicular Manslaughter or DUI Causing Injury or Death.
"Nevada’s legal definition of vehicular homicide is when a person:
Is committing DUI; and
Causes a lethal collision; and
Has three prior DUI convictions
The only “element” that differentiates vehicular homicide from DUI causing death is having three prior DUI convictions. These prior convictions can be from any time in the defendant’s life. There is no “lookback” or “washout” period for NRS 484C.130 charges.
Nevada's DUI causing injury or death is a category B felony in Nevada. The punishment includes:
2 to 20 years in Nevada State Prison,
A fine of $2,000 to $5,000 (at the judge’s discretion),
A 3-year license revocation by the DMV, and
1 to 3 years of having an ignition interlock device as a condition of reinstating driving privileges"
The issue with most, not all, football players is.....you can take the kid out of the hood, but you can`t take the hood out of the kid.
And because of this all players get FREE CAR SERVICE 24/7 whenever they want. He could have left his car at the party and used the car service — which makes this even more of a crime.
Summary: He was drunk as a skunk (BAC .161), did not use the Uber service provided by the NFL, going 156 mph on a public street, 127 mph when he hit the RAV-4, the woman died screaming as bystanders tried unsuccessfully to get her out of the car, Ruggs didn't even try to help, his GF (passenger) was also injured, he was abusive to EMS/police/hospital staff, and he had a loaded gun in the car.
In Texas, having a firearm in the car and getting charged with DUI means you also get charged with carrying a firearm during the commission of a crime, and you get more time in prison.
