Many road plows have another plow between the wheels, which this person was using. Looks like he was trying to plow it closer to center median, but was driving too fast. I plow snow with a pickup truck and it’s always kinda fun to shoot snow or water that far at speed, but never into a road or at cars/people. Probably won’t get fired due to lack of drivers.

I don’t know, they’re probably looking at millions in payouts, and I doubt the state’s insurance company will still want to cover this driver.

A plow operator in Ohio in the US was caught on camera launching snow and ice over a highway median on Sunday. The slushy mess damaged approximately 40 vehicles and caused some personal injuries. The turnpike commission immediately placed the driver on administrative leave, pending investigation.

Video from truck driver Michael Lemon shows passenger cars traveling down an otherwise gray and dreary road scene when an arc of slush suddenly emerges, blanketing everything with a thud and causing one vehicle to spin off of the embankment.

BTW: due to shortage of maintenance drivers, some towns in Massachusetts resorted to offering wages up to $310 per hour, while Colorado's Department of Transportation added a $2,000 snow bonus for road-maintenance-workers.

I'm not sure what there is to "investigate" here.

You're taught in drivers ed that if you hit or about to hit an object you remain going straight and brake. Just like the trucker did. You do not go yanking the wheel and veering off the road. The car that ran off the road is just a lousy driver. Honestly, after reading the comments here I was expecting the spray to be 20x worse than what it was. Not that the plow driver isn't going way too fast.

I guess the driver saw the snow and debris falling on the cars and just panicked. Also, probably the road became slick.
All you need is just one or two cars to break on a highway and a pile up starts to happen.
The slush could have hard pieces of snow and ice falling on the cars - it caused several cracked windshields. Some cars sustained minor damage, while others had more severe damage.
The commission is coordinating efforts with the Ohio State Highway Patrol to contact each person involved in the accident directly. They also can file property damage claim.

I disagree. 40 car accidents usually make national news.

I used to plow snow too, but many, many years ago in a 65 Bronco. I plowed the business before I had a license and plowed after during the 80's and 90's before all of these new plows they have these days

Unfortunately we may never know if he got back into a plow or not. The pay out won't come for months.

Thanks for the article. According to it he was not a new plow driver, has been there since 2015.

Snow plow tosses slush onto windshields, damaging about 40 vehicles on Ohio Turnpike

Quote:
The snow plow driver has been employed by the Ohio Turnpike since December 2015, Ohio Turnpike and Infrastructure Commission spokesman Charles Cyrill said.

The driver was immediately removed from the shift and sent for mandatory drug and alcohol testing. He is currently on administrative leave pending the outcome of the investigation, Cyrill said.

Snow plow operators are provided with extensive training and provided with equipment to perform their duties, Cyrill noted.

Young or inexperienced (or sleepy) plow driver, watching his plow, (for snagging / obstructions.... Not his left mirror (for results).

Just careless, and not thinking about recipients. Maybe plow had just transitioned from a region with a median.. to a narrow stretch with adjacent oncoming traffic. (Jersey barrier / guard rail).

I can see the potential for error.

Or angry intent (unlikely, unless near retirement and getting paid leave at above mentioned pay rates)

If you read up to my last reply, you'll see the plow driver has been there since 2015. He's in his early 50's, had drug testing, has been placed on leave until they're done investigating to decide what to do to him.

I'm curious what they'll find since he threw the snow for a few miles.

Here's a new article from 2 days ago. They identified the driver, I did not bring his info over.

44 motorists file claims after Ohio Turnpike snowplow incident - Feb 3, 2022

Quote:
There were 12 known injuries from the incident, none of which were life-threatening.

Sergeant Ray Santiago of the Ohio State Highway Patrol said Tuesday the crash investigation is in the review process with the Erie County Prosecutor’s office.

Santiago said the official total number of vehicles involved in the incident has now been updated to 56.

the wintry mix from the snowplow hit oncoming vehicles and appeared to have occurred over a couple miles, resulting in damage to cars and trucks, causing accidents and injuries.

driver remains on administrative leave pending the results of the commission's administrative review.
