A plow operator in Ohio in the US was caught on camera launching snow and ice over a highway median on Sunday. The slushy mess damaged approximately 40 vehicles and caused some personal injuries. The turnpike commission immediately placed the driver on administrative leave, pending investigation.
Video from truck driver Michael Lemon shows passenger cars traveling down an otherwise gray and dreary road scene when an arc of slush suddenly emerges, blanketing everything with a thud and causing one vehicle to spin off of the embankment.
BTW: due to shortage of maintenance drivers, some towns in Massachusetts resorted to offering wages up to $310 per hour, while Colorado's Department of Transportation added a $2,000 snow bonus for road-maintenance-workers.
When I first saw the title of this thread, I thought, "What the heck, I get hit by the plow like that all the time!!!"
Then I saw the video,
I do NOT get hit by the plow LIKE THAT all the time.
I know that it's a highway, but that dude just needs to slow down.
I thought similar, then saw it looks like it's coming from the back of his truck, so it must feed from the front. I wonder if he forgot to switch it or if it was deliberate
This driver is going to cost his employer a LOT of money. Here in Ontario, the plows operate in groups of 5 to 8 trucks to clear the pavement from the left guardrail to the far right shoulder of the highway, in a coordinated move. At a standard speed of 40 mph. It is a Ontario highway Act offence to try to pass a snowplow group on a highway here. $500 fine and 3 demerit points.
If there wasn’t Twitter video of the snowplow, it’s doubtful a news article. At some level, “ grandma Mabel falling in a crosswalk” is not newsworthy.
It caused a 40-car accident. I think that's news regardless of whether there is video. Probably not national news, but locally/regionally a 40-car accident is probably the leading story on the news. I don't see a 40-car accident as comparable to an elderly lady falling.
