Why do people put so much faith in GPS for remote areas? A quick look at the coordinates on Google Maps shows the location is nowhere close to an actual road. Another case of too much trust in technology combined with stubbornness resulting in death.
I know - at least look up where you are going before you head out on one of these trips. The real roads etc. Don't just blindly follow along on GPS.

have a real map handy.
The good GPS systems continue to work based on pre-loaded maps. I think they have to be connected to your vehicle's computers so they know which direction your are moving and how fast. However this is more than just a missed turn or two. They must have planned to go out into this wilderness area.
There are roads not far from those coordinates. They're just dirt roads which of course means that when it rains they turn into muddy messes that a normal vehicle will struggle to pass.
But looking at it in fact I suspect their problem may have been that there's actually a good few of those dirt roads which means there's a lot of forks in the road with only one option which will get you closer to getting out of that area. And it's not like there'd be a lot of visual pointers, you're not going to see city lights or anything pointing you toward civilization.
They were only a good 8-9 miles from Silver Peak where they likely would have encountered at least a few people, but being seniors they likely had no confidence in their ability to hike that distance in rough terrain and wanted to stay near their vehicles.
And planning implies checking more than one source for information about an unfamiliar situation! Just don't get it and probably never will.
Or just using the old brain. Hmm, muddy dirt road full of snow in an RV with a Kia tow vehicle. Maybe not take this road. Or just YOLO it and see how it turns out.
Here is a 20 minute interview with the nephew. He explains the details of how they ended up where they did. Worth a listen if you want to hear what the woman who survived told her family about the sequence of events.
