I'm new to the area and I'm used to golf courses being closed for the winter in the northeast. Is it different down here?

Yes. You can pretty much golf year-round. There will be closures for bad weather or conditions that threaten the course, but o/w they are open.

in the winter--there is normally a frost delay so tee times are usually not going to start until temps are above freezing--
just depends on the weather
and some golf courses have more freeze damage than others--might have cart-path-only rules or greens that are damaged and using relief areas...

so I would always call and check on the condition of the course when you make a reservation...
and if you are not used to playing in colder weather--get some winter golf gloves and some nice ski/silk underwear--wind around here in winter always creates more of a chill effect than the temp might indicate...

Last year the courses were close 10 days in December, 13 days in January, 8 days in February and 4 days in March (freak snow storm). Now that's not saying it wasn't COLD during the other days during Dec-Feb., but heck...who cares when you're playing golf. And the cart girls are selling shots to keep you warm!

We played one day in 40 degree weather. Man...could barely hold my club when the wind blew.
