Congrats on selling your home!

Why not contact a Realtor in Texas, that is in your area that you want to lease and have them find you a home to lease? If they do not do such things then they can connect you with the people who do. That's where I would start then go from there. That way they can handle everything here (in Texas) for you while you are in California. I'm sure it would cost a fee but it would be worth it (less headaches).

Who knows, they might do it for free if you are planning to buy a home through them after the lease is up...

I'd rent close to where you plan to work. Stonebridge is a pretty sizeable commute if you end up working in Dallas. I wouldn't want to be brand new in an area and sitting in traffic 2.5 hours per day. You'll nest faster if you work closer to work. Once your settled in, then you can start looking at the what ifs involved in purchasing a home further out.
