If you're going to Mesquite you may want to consider Forney, Heath, Rockwall, Rowlett?
Lots of pretty areas around the lake....

I would say Lakewood Proper if you want a lot of community spirit, organizations and good schools - Forest Hills if you want to be a little more secluded. Casa Linda Estates might also be good for you. The latter are probably 5-7 minutes closer to Mesquite. You can enjoy White Rock Lake from any of them but you wouldn't have to cross any major streets or go through stop lights to get to the lake from Lakewood Proper. I also feel that area will appreciate the most in East Dallas.

Lakewood - 75214, bordered by White Rock Lake to the east, Abrams to the west, Mockingbird to the north, Gaston to the south.

Caruth Terrace/ University Terrace- 75214, bordered by White Rock Lake to the east, Skillman to the west, Mockingbird to the south, Lovers Lane to the north

M Streets/ Lakewood Heights- 75206, bordered by 75 to the west, Abrams to the east, Mockingbird to the north, and loosely Prospect/La Vista/ Henderson to the south

Cochran Heights- 75206, jewel of a neighborhood bordered by 75 to the west, Henderson to the north, Fitzhugh to the south, Belmont to the east

"C Streets"- 75214, east of Lakewood Country Club- bordered by Grand to the east, Country Club to the west, Gaston to the north, La Vista to the south

Hollywood Heights/Santa Monica- 75223, immediately south of C Streets. Southern border is Valencia.

Junius Heights/ Munger Place/ Swiss Avenue Historic District- 75214, to the southeast of Lakewood Country Club. Bordered by Abrams/Columbia to the east, Live Oak to the west, Fitzhugh to the south

Forrest Hills- 75218, east of White Rock Lake. Huge lots! Bordered by Highland to the south, old train tracks to the east, Garland Road to the west, Lakeland to the north

Old Lake Highlands- 75218, on the east bank of the lake. Bordered by loop 12/ northwest highway to the north, Easton to the east, and Lake Highlands Drive to the south

Casa Linda/ Casa View/ Little Forrest Hills- 75218, bordered by Old Lake Highlands to the north/west, by Forrest Hills to the south, by the train tracks to the east, and Peavy to the north

This basically leaves a pocket between Junius Heights/ Munger Place/ Swiss Avenue and downtown Dallas. That pocket is pretty much the only area to avoid. Not super crime ridden, just vey low income and not redeveloped.
