Maybe it's just me, but since moving to Dallas, I feel as if home burglaries are reported a lot here in the news. I've lived in several different cities and have never seen this. Not that it didn't happen, but I guess they didn't think it was newsworthy? I don't have any stats to back this up. I guess it's good to be aware, but it seems to be of great concern here. I'd like to hear what others think.

You might as well get used to hearing them on the news. There are certain neighborhoods in Dallas that are more subjected to crimes than others. According to this site, Texas ranked the second highest, behind California, in terms of robbery crimes. Moderator cut: link removed, linking to competitor sites is not allowed
If you lived outside of TX before, I'm not surprised that news of home invasions aren't as commonplace.

Because there are a ton of worthless, gutless thieves in Texas -- especially in the big cities.

burglaries are a huge problem in this state to begin with, Dallas, Houston,
& San Antonio historical have had some of the highest raw numbers and rates in the country.

More burglaries there are the greater chance home invasions are going to happen.

Get a gun and defend your home. Its perfectly legal to kill a home invader here.

Home Invasions are a big thing in DFW seems like. I know for a while a couple years back Carrollton and Mid Cities were getting hit pretty hard. A realtor friend of mine said her best friend was attacked in her own home. Another I remember was shot in the face when she opened the door.

People are rough here and the law does not do much about it.

Best advice ever! In MA you would be put in prison if you shot someone who invaded your home.

Really? So do you have to stab them or bludgeon them to death?

I think it's because our local news still thinks of itself as "local." I regularly see coverage of cats in trees being rescued by fireman and preemie babies in the NICU, so of course human interest stories like home invasions are covered, too.

When I lived in NYC, the local news rarely covered these "neighborhood" type stories unless it was violent (rape, murder) crime. The rest of the news was either political (much more local & state political coverage than in Dallas) or cultural (which broadway show was opening, hot restaurants, events going on around town) or sports (about equal coverage in both cities, with Dallas covering high school & college and NYC sticking exclusively to the pro's).

Also, a city like NYC had a ton of tourists and the local networks there probably make a conscious decision NOT to broadcast the lesser crimes (lesser meaning non-violent) and scare the tourists.

Or even better, get a large dog. I have a gun, but with two large dogs, I doubt I'll ever have to use it and if someone is still willing to break in, I'll have plenty of warning. Plus I don't have to be at home for them to do their job.
