We are in Dallas now and will be starting the construction of some new apartments shortly off of La Vista and East Grand. I just found that the Santa Fe Trail is right at the property.

Is this trail safe to walk or ride bikes? My wife and I went to White Rock and was overwhelmed by the fast bike riders. Hopefully this trail may be a little slower.

D magazine did a piece recently on the Santa Fe trail. It's not completely finished, but yes, it is a wonderful trail for biking and walking. There's also a Friends of the Santa Fe Trail group and website that has info on it.

Yes it's safe. It's nice because it connects into the White Rock Lake trail which then connects to the White Rock Creek trail. They just opened the Cottonwood trail the forks of of the White Rock Creak trail also. Dallas is finally starting to get a decent interconnected bike trail system. There are plans in place to connect the Katy trail too. Dallas Parks - Hikes and Biking Trails (http://www.dallasparks.org/parks/trails.aspx - broken link)

Seems the Katy Trail has reports of crime, whereas I haven't seen any on the much more eclectic Santa Fe Trail, which goes from White Rock Lake, Lakewood Country Club/Hollywood Heights to Mount Auburn to Deep Ellum.

As Ramona mentioned the trail group has many plans for improvements: Friends of the Santa Fe Trail
